What is OLED and AMOLED?

OLED: Organic Light Emitting Diode is a new screen technology to rival LCD and plasma.

AMOLED: Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode.

There is no substantial difference between the two. Active Matrix is a method for controlling individual pixels.

How it works
OLED pixels are self illuminating, unlike your traditional LCD screen which requires back lighting. This means less power consumption and longer battery life and thinner displays.

This is not the only benefit of having OLED screens. They offer SUPERIOR brightness, viewing angle, response time and contrast ratios. Not to even mention that the screens are so flexible to fit in phone screens and cameras.

OLED is the new generation of screens
Soon you will see OLED displays replacing TV screens. However, the technology is quite pricey for larger screens at the present time. (Images below)

AMOLED has exceptionally high contrast than TFT-LCD because it can express true black, expressing crystal clear image.

Due to a wider colour gamut and high contrast ratio, AMOLED is perceived to be about 100∼150cd/m² brighter than TFT-LCD.

AMOLED brightness

AMOLED's lightening response time yields no shadow effect, resulting in no fatigue or eye strain.

samsung i7500 with AMOLED

I am samsung device fans, and i heard samsung i 7500 was the first google system wth Amoled display.
I do think samsung is the leader of AMOLED in this world. I wan to ask you, the author, if AMOLED smartphone was pop in your country now? are there many phones with AMOLED smart phone support MMS?

I saw that OLED XEL1 live. Picture is really amazing. I didn't know that so may gadgets already have that screen. Check out www.oledgadgets.com. That Russian Art. Lebedev keyboard is really something. But all that nice toys are still to expensive to me. Maybe next year...
