MXit v5.7 now available for download

MXit is probably the most popular mobile instant messaging service in South Africa and it's not hard to see why. It's super cheap to keep in contact with friends/family, find new friends and is a good place to get useful information; Samsung Mobile's SAM being a brilliant example.

MXit v5.7 is now out! Their Info section reveals that this release has the following updates (only a select few shown here):

Manual reconnection - this is especially helpful when in an area with a low signal
New MXit Skinz - to those who care about personalising its look
Access to emoticons and mark-up when using in-line edit - yay!
Menus open automatically - finally! I'd always found it to be a pain to have to send a message first to get a menu listing
Touch screen input - those with Samsung F480s and the like will appreciate this nifty feature
Added support for QWERTY keyboards
Faster logging in
Improved speed

The default background has some sort of green theme going on. Can't say it makes it any easier to read white text on it but I'll live :)

Make sure that your settings are selected. Use your service providers internet settings and make sure that they are selected. If it does not work try checking whether you have enough airtime as this can play a role. If neither of these work than contact MXit support.

i would recommend you to modify your default internet settings, specifically your port number, change it from "8080" to "9201"...sometimes just switch your phone off and on and try to log in again. Hope this helps...

Connection Types

It depends on which IP is used and which port the network supports, but does not matter which connection you use really though, the client will still use TCP on 8080 etc...

Malcolm good luck in getting support from MXit by telephone or cellphone where you can get access to a real human being.

In 2007 I met meet Glenn Alexander, the MXit Support manager, and he showed me the call centre/tech support centre they were building in Stellenbosch. At the time their Support Department was staffed by 2 girls. They were fielding a lot ton of calls from users even in the few minutes I was around them. This call centre or support centre was going to be upgraded to a 24 hour, 7 day a week, service to assist users.

So today feel like a idiot because have told thousands of parents, teachers and kids to call MXit their dysfunctional call centre Tel. 0861-00-6948 over the last year.

Does it work? Is it available? Maybe when hell freezes over will they begin treating their 9 million users with enough respect and appreciation to offer a call centre service where you can pickup your phone and call a human being. Not everyone has access to email support@mxit.com and in fact the core MXit users base does not bother with email. It is very, very low on their hierarchy of values.

Anyway who cares! Right?

I would just like to inform you that our MXit Interactive Assistance - 0861 00 6948 (MXit) is now available.

When you came to MXit Lifestyle and saw our call support centre at that time it was not as busy as it did get when I started at MXit Lifestyle as call support. The call support centre was outsourced due to the fact that we could not keep up with the hundreds of calls coming through. To make a long story short, this did not work so we decided to bring it back in house.

It did take some time to have this all setup again but rest assured, it is now available.

Our support email has worked wonders as we are getting in close to 500 emails a day which our support agents are taking care of. Yes it does seem fair to conclude that not everyone has access to email but email is available on many cell phones and we have helped thousands of MXit users this way.

At the moment we do not have a call centre up and running unfortunately. We had our two ladies doing call support quite awhile back which I also joined them helping them out.

We did out source our call centre a few months back but thought rather to bring it back and keep it in house.

At the moment we are busy with a IVR call system where MXit users can call, follow the steps and will be lead to the steps on sorting their problems out. We know it did take quite some time to get this up and running, but we had to get cables laid so we can run an IVR system.

Opera Mini

Normally when you get the 'Installation failed' error, you will need to change a few settings on your phone in order for the phone to pick up a GPRS connection through a java application such as MXit.

If MXit worked on your SGH-250 before then maybe you need to reset the phone to it's defaults. - don't forget to backup everything.

If it still doesn't work maybe Pooosh would be an alternative. Although their main objective is Voice Chat Messaging. Free "Unlimited Instant Messaging" is also offered.

Otherwise you could try Skype.

We do not officially support this handset just yet as we have encountered some issues with the download of MXit. But you can get version 5.7.2 onto this phone.

From your phone's default wap browser download opera mini from www.operamini.com

Opera mini is an application where you can browse the full internet. Once you have opera mini of the phone, while in opera mini goto www.mxit.com/wap and download the phone version for the Samsung D600. This version will be version 5.7.2 and will install successfully on this phone.

Why do some phones

When the phone is manufactured there is a certain amount of dynamic memory allocated to it.

Now MXit uses the dynamic memory when sending and receiving of data so hence the memory will get lower and lower until it is finished. Once it is finished previous messages on the phone will be deleted.

Now with that said, many of the features in version 5.4 or higher uses quite a bit more memory than just texting and this is why the older phones only support version 5.3.

Unfortunately there is no way to increase dynamic memory as this is built into the phone when it is manufactured.

I had a similar problem. It seemed as though my mobile number was already registered on the MXit network ( but I hadn't registered it ). So it could be that someone has the same MXit contact as you. This is true!

If this is the case then changing the MXit pin will stop anyone who does not have authorized access to the profile.

So if the number has been recycled, isn't there a possibility that the person can use his old MXit number to access the MXit application, thus using the new users MXit contacts. Or is there a fail safe in place?

Deleting a contact and re-adding them has nothing to do with GPRS/connection problems.

Cell C - MXit charges

Just something that has come to my attention.

Cell C - when logging onto MXit, it is still free but something has changed on their side. So now when you log into MXit using Cell C, there is a 'deposit' taken of 96c. When the GPRS connection is closed the 96c is returned to your airtime.

1. In MXit, go to "Menu" - "Contacts" - "Add contact" - "Jabber"
2. Enter the correct Jabber ID for the user you'd like to invite. For example, if the relevant user has the South African phone number 0831234567, try inviting the user as a Jabber contact using the following Jabber ID: 27831234567@mxit.co.za
3. Enter a nickname

If you are using all four network providers and still experiencing lag then this could be due to the phone settings on your phone not setup correctly. When changing a service provider then the settings on the phone should be set up manually as well.

Unfortunately billing of GPRS is on the service provider's side. This is something MXit cannot control. MXit does not charge for GPRS usage, MXit only requires one present.

But to think about it, R2/MB is not a lot compared to when GPRS was first introduced in South Africa is was close to R50/MB. I am not too sure of the figures but it was quite a lot.

First thing you need to do is download MXit onto this handset. If you are getting an error message stating "Unsupported Content" then you will need to go for a firmware upgrade so that Java is loaded on this phone so it can support applications such as MXit. This phone uses its normal GPRS connection for Java applications, this is why it does not have a separate Java settings. Do the following again and see if you can select the connection you created:

4. Select CONNECTION
5. Make sure that your service providers GPRS settings are selected.
6. Go back to the OPTIONS menu

Request new GPRS settings from your service provider:

* CellC users: Dial *147#
* MTN users: Dial *123*13#
* Virgin Mobile users: Go to the Virgin Mobile menu on your phone and select "Virgin Settings". When prompted to download the settings, reply "YES".
* Vodacom users: Dial *111# (select option 4 or 5)

Once you have received these save them as your default GPRS profile then restart your phone.

Once the phone is back on now try MXit again.

Depending on which Samsung cell phone you are currently using you could possibly use MXit Elite instead.

MXit Pro is the version for lower end phones and does not support all the features that MXit has to offer. MXit Pro is just another name for version 5.3.1.

MXit Elite on the other hand is the latest version of MXit 5.8.0. Of course this would be a better version to use as it offers many more features than what Pro offers.

If you are still having issues then download opera mini from www.operamini.com and once installed use Opera Mini to download MXit. Opera Mini is an application that allows you to browse the full net using your cell phone. A very handy application.

There seems to be a problem here.

Does your number perhaps start with a 076 or 076?

This error you getting normally comes from a glitch when you registered and it picked up as 076 and not 2776 and this is why activation failed.

On MXit go to MENU - SETTINGS - ALERT PROFILE and make sure that the DISABLE MARK UP option is not selected.

* It must be WAP enabled.
* It must be JAVA enabled.
* It be able to download third party Java applications such as MXit.

I am still having problems with my SE W302 and MXit. I have downloaded the latest MXit (I think it's MXit Elite) and it downloads and saves to my phone but I cant get it to install.

I was told to create the following connection on my phone:

firmware for Samsung i560

I have had great trouble trying to connect to the internet using my phone as a modem for my laptop, but after 5 days calling the help desk, removing PC7 studio from the pc and re-installing software and modem drivers only to get the same problem, it just ain't picking up the driver. Eventually i decided to call a service centre who told me within 10 seconds that i need a firmware upgrade and it would take 5 working days to get my phone back. Firstly why would the data support centre of Samsung not know about this problem, and give me tedious work changing connection settings, restarting pc etc etc etc. Then i joined the blog to download the firmware myself as it would be alot quicker, only to find that there is no firmware for this model, but a lot for the Omnia.

Can anyone help me with this

HTC Touch Pro and no MXit

Used an HTC Dual b4 that worked fine on Java and Pocket PC versions simultaneously with my HTC Touch Pro. I have absolutely no joy, no matter how i download the application. I've tried saving it to the phone memory including to the memory card and still no joy. The application fully downloads but upon opening it says 'error occurred, retry' and I've done numerous uninstalling of the application.

This is an issue with the firmware currently on your phone that does not support Java application such as MXit.

You will need to take your phone in for a firmware upgrade before you are able to use MXit on this phone.

Hey there. I've had this Sony Ericson w302 now since January and have been trying to get mxit on it since. I've followed every one of your instructions listed below and nothing works...it still just says opening. This phone is messed up with mxit...please could I have some help on this?
