Samsung Galaxy S Launches to lead the smartphone charge
7 June 2010
More than 100 operators across the globe choose the Samsung Galaxy S as their key smartphone market driver
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, has announced a new addition to its smartphone family, the Samsung Galaxy S (Model: GT-I9000). The Samsung Galaxy S is a new class of smartphone that will deliver a wealth of intelligent, immersive and integrated experiences for users and change the way people think about smartphones.
Samsung is excited to announce the forthcoming release of the new Samsung Wave smartphone in South Africa. It’s the first phone ever released that runs on the new bada platform, Samsung’s brand new mobile operating system - for which an entire ecosystem is currently being created - complete with its own applications store: Samsung Apps, which will be available in 80 countries worldwide. The name of the game here is the democratization of the smartphone. This may sound like a difficult concept but really what it means is simple – rather than attempting to compete with other mobile platforms, the vision with bada is for it to turn all of Samsung’s existing conventional customers into smartphone users – and the way to do this is by making smartphones more affordable, until they become the standard phone for all users. The Wave is Samsung’s first phone that makes this vision a reality.
Apart from being the first phone to use bada, there are plenty of other reasons to get excited about the new Samsung Wave. It has been attracting attention for a number of reasons, and the main one seems to be the Super AMOLED display. Much brighter, clearer and less reflective than any display before it, it offers the best viewing experience ever seen on a mobile. The 800x480 resolution, 3.3” wide display offers a superbly vivid image, with great outdoor readability, a wider viewing angle than ever before, anti-smudge technology and video playback with no motion blurs – and it has great battery life too.

Last year's Samsung Jet competition winner, Benedict Winkler won a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Kennedy Space Centre and Cape Canaveral. The competition required entrants to design a spaceship using the components on the microsite. You can view some of the submissions in the gallery section at samsungjet.co.za and experience the AR (Augmented Reality) component here.
Benedict was kind enough to share some of his pictures with the Blog community (see below) and has said the following of his experience:
The Samsung Blog team attended the last leg of the Samsung Mobile L!ve "Smart Move" mall tour this past Saturday at Maponya Mall in Soweto. Samsung brand ambassador and legendary South African soccer player, Shaun Bartlett, made an appearance to a highly appreciative crowd.

If you’ve read some of the recent content on this blog, about the Samsung Developer Challenge and the new Samsung Wave, then you’ll already know that without doubt the most exciting development on Samsung Mobile’s horizon is the launch of new mobile platform bada. 33% of Samsung mobile phones will run on the bada mobile platform, which has its own ecosystem, and the centre of this ecosystem is the Samsung Apps store, which will allow users to download a range of exciting apps designed especially for their phones.
The potential of bada as a tool for creating apps is only beginning to be explored. Already, a visit to the store (http://www.samsungapps.com/) will give you a sneak peak into what you can expect – a range of applications that will spice up your Samsung phone while also making it far more useful. Developers have been hard at work, creating anything from the most practical of applications – such as phrasebooks, virtual torches, navigation devices and currency converters – to the most fun – with games like Dragon Fire, Homerun Battle 3D, The Wars and Let’s Golf just to name a few examples.
Today marks the start of a new Samsung Blog Phone-per-quarter competition where the most active Samsung Blog member can work towards winning a Samsung handset. We'd like to congratulate Blog member virtue on winning a Samsung B7330 in last quarter's competition.
In this quarter we're giving away Samsung's first bada phone, the Samsung Wave.
